Photography
When it comes to creatiing a memorable image for your company or product, photography can make a huge difference in how you are perceived in the marketplace. At Built Creative our photographers can produce high quality images captured in the studio or on location, on film or digitally. However, if custom photography is out of the question, we offer the services of outside resources for both rights managed and royalty free photography, as well as maintaining our own pool of stock imagery to choose from that is growing all the time. Now we'd like to take a moment to explain the pros and cons of the various photography types.
Custom Photography (Pros)
1.) Being in control of the final image ensures that we can get the right image for the job instead of settling for an image that is less than perfect, which in turn translates to fewer hours retouching.
2.) You will have original, one-of-a-kind images that are uniquely you and that no one else is using. This is especially critical when you are providing a product or service that is in direct competition with similar businesses.
3.) Depending on the subject matter, models, product inclusion, and so on, Full Exclusive Rights can be obtained on custom photography. This ensures that you can use the images however you want at any time in the future and that no one else will ever be granted the right to use those images.
4.) Custom photography often costs less than Rights Managed image purchases. Rights Managed images are based on a per use basis which in some cases can add up to thousands of dollars. In contrast, Custom Photography gives you the ability to pay a one time fee that is usually much less than the cost of several Rights Managed usages.
5.) With Custom Photography, the photographer typically takes several exposures and angles of each shot. This allows us to choose the BEST image for the job instead of the very limited choices offered with Stock.
Custom Photography (Cons)
1.) It is often more expensive than Royalty Free Imagery.
2.) Can require more planning and coordination to orchestrate.
3.) Acquiring model and property releases can be difficult.
Rights Managed Images (Pros)
1.) Once the image is located, it can often be downloaded from the website immediately with no film processing expenses, waiting on an overnight delivery, etc.
2.) Can be an excellent resource for historical, archival, or generally hard to find images that might otherwise be impossible to obtain. It can also be an excellent resource for locating shots of places, things or events that would otherwise be difficult or cost prohibitve to shoot due to seasonal conflicts, difficulty accessing remote locations, and so on.
3.) Online providers often offer a variety of subject matter and styles from which to choose.
Rights Managed Images (Cons)
1.) Depending on number of usages, insertions, etc., can be very expensive.
2.) Obtaining Exclusive Rights is almost completely cost prohibitive.
3.) Can take time filtering through all the possiblities to narrow down your choices.
4.) Only offer one or two variations of each image and may not have "the right" image.
5.) May require additional Production Time by the designer to make the image work in the layout.
6.) May be used by competitors in the same industry or market.
Royalty Free Images (Pros)
1.) Typically is the cheapest of the three image types.
2.) Royalty Free means just that –you have the right to use the image forever, whenever and however you want with no limitations or restrictions.
3.) Can be downloaded immediately in most cases.
4.) Online providers often offer a variety of subject matter and styles from which to choose.
5.) It can also be an excellent resource for locating shots of places, things or events that would otherwise be difficult or cost prohibitve to shoot due to seasonal conflicts, difficulty accessing remote locations, and so on.
Royalty Free Images (Cons)
1.) Cannot give you Exclusive Rights, which means it may be used frequently by many other companies.
2.) Can take time locating an acceptable image from the rather extensive online image collections.
3.) Only offer one or two variations of each image and may not have "the right" image.
4.) May require additional Production Time by the designer to make the image work in the layout.
5.) Generally, Royalty Free images are of a lesser quality than the other two categories both in photographic technique, style, aesthetic, and available image sizes/resolutions.
